One of the biggest hurdles all people starting in e-Marketing face is the sense of overwhelm we get due to information overload. Everyone experiences this, and you have to push through it. For most of us, e-Marketing represents a whole new way to go about making a living. Most people work at a job of some sort. In a job, the basic arrangement is that you do something and you get paid for it over time. When you switch to working for yourself, you are no longer paid for the time you put in. In order to make money, you need to do two things: offer great products or services, and drum up business. If you aren't doing both of these effectively, you are not making money. Most people are stronger on one side of this equation than the other. Most people are stronger at providing a product or service, but marketing is something they are not very familiar with, though the opposite is sometimes true as well. e-Marketing is a set of practices used to promote products or services. There are many great tools, techniques and strategies at our disposal and anyone can learn to do it. But there is a lot to learn, and sheer volume of it can make it seem overwhelming. So is there a magic formula you can apply to guarantee success? The answer is no. Each business is different and experience matters in terms of achieving success. If you were to dedicate yourself to this for, say, 20 year and tested absolutely everything, you could figure out how to make all of this work. But no one gets into running their own business with the idea of it only paying off 20 years later! Unfortunately, most people who experience information overload feel like they've hit a wall and just stop trying. Most people who are struggling to make money will tell you they have stopped giving it their best effort, or have stopped trying entirely. If you aren't doing much, it is no wonder that you aren't succeeding much, right? When asked why they are stuck, why they aren't taking action, the most common answer is that they have a sense of helplessness and overwhelm. Everyone goes through it, including the most successful e-Marketers. Also, information overload is not something only novices experience. It actually never goes away! No matter how successful you get at e-Marketing, you are still going to have to deal with it, and overcome it. If you can figure out how to handle it early, you will be in a better position to keep dealing with it forever. To master information overload and overwhelm, you need put a few strategies in place... Take a new mental approach to the things you want to accomplish: think of them as you would teach a young child how to do something new. The new thing needs to be a challenge, or stretch for the child; otherwise they will not learn and progress. But the child also needs to see the new challenge as being achievable. A goal which is too advanced for them will freeze them from taking action. They may need to see someone else do it first, or have you help them do it a few times before they get up the nerve to try it on their own. This same kind of target - something that is a challenge for you, but which you can see is possible to accomplish - is what you want to set for yourself. Too little challenge and you won't be motivated. Too much challenge and you will feel overwhelmed by it. Focus on one project at a time. Multitasking is your enemy. Our brains were not designed to keep focus on several things at once. In fact, it is just the opposite: our brains filter and delete almost all of what it takes in, in order to help us focus on a particular task at hand. The research shows that, contrary to popular belief, multitasking makes us less efficient, and less productive. Multitasking has also been shown to kill brain cells! Focusing on one thing at a time makes us more efficient and productive. So stop multitasking right now! Organize your tasks. The simple act of keeping track of all the things we need to do is actually one of our biggest sources of stress. You can eliminate this stress by having a system which tracks your tasks. This can be very simple... just keep a list somewhere. When you think of something new which you need to do, immediately add it to the list, and then stop thinking about it. You will be reminded to do it again when you next check your task list. Review your task list each day, preferably at night to organize it for the next morning. Whatever the most important thing you need to do is, move to the top of your list, and prioritize the rest of the list in order of importance. When a new task comes up, put it at the bottom of the list. Don't let new tasks distract you from doing the things you have previously identified as the most priorities. Don't let other distractions, like checking email, interrupt the order you handle your tasks. E-mail is the most common distraction for most people. We tend to think we should check it before we start our other work. But email is a huge time-waster: the deeper you get into it the more distracted from your priorities you become. This sort of organization and structure is difficult for many entrepreneurs. Many people choose to be in business for themselves specifically because they like to jump from task to task without a lot of structure and organization. Realize that you have these tendencies and put a structure in place to help you stay on track. Use the 80/20 rule. You may have heard the idea that 80 percent of your results come from only 20 percent of the work you put in. Figure out what work gives you the biggest gains, and focus on those. Most of what you do probably gives you only small, or no gains. These tasks should be your lowest priority, or should be ignored, delegated or outsourced. The playing field has never been more level! The opportunities, never so plentiful! |
